Accountants and Auditors

Accountants and auditors manage financial information for clients. Accountants and auditors can work for companies, the government and individual clients in the public, private or not-for-profit sectors. Accountants keep financial records, and prepare financial statements and financial tax returns.

There are many types of accounting: public accounting, management accounting, government accounting, and forensic accounting. Auditors examine and evaluate records and financial accounts to determine their accuracy, authenticity and completeness. Then they make any necessary adjustments or corrections.

The process of auditing can be performed by someone within the company (internal auditors) or someone outside the company (external auditors). There are also governmental auditors who work on the national, state and local levels. An Internal Revenue Service (IRS) auditor is an example of a governmental auditor.
